Project Opensky 747-400 (v4)

review

The Boeing 747 is a long-range, wide body commercial passenger jet aircraft. The Boeing 747-400 was launched in 1985 and entered service in 1989. The -400 version introduced improvements like winglets, tail fuel tanks, new more powerful and fuel efficient engines, new interior, and new glass cockpit with six large CRT displays. The stretched upper deck that was introduced with the -300 version was standard for the passenger and combi variants, while the new cargo version kept the smaller upper deck, which was useless in freighter configuration as no cargo is placed on this deck.

Project Opensky is a freeware aircraft developer group that has been around for some time. They developed many aircraft models for FS2002 and FS2004, mostly Boeing aircraft. Their Boeing 747-400 is a highly detailed representation of its real world counterpart. A few of the features are: dynamic shine, fully animated control surfaces, opening passenger and cargo doors, ground service vehicles, dynamic flexing wings and more. There are many different models available like GE, PW and RR powered versions. There is also a Dream Lifter model with opening swing-tail cargo bay.

The flight dynamics are improved compared to the older version 3 747 series as is the wingflex, which is lift based instead of gear compression based. Unfortunately, the rudder effectiveness has not been improved and is still insufficient to keep the aircraft aligned with the runway centerline in crosswind conditions. Many liveries are available on the Project Open Sky website.

    One of the best freeware 744's, and almost no impact on framerates makes this my favourite freeware 747.

    The rudder effectiveness along wit the sliding issue on the ground has been fixed...

    The fix doesn't do anything with the rudder effect problem. Strong crosswind is still no go for this aircraft.

    That happens when you use another panel. The panel that is included (edited default 747 panel) controls the landing gear and a few other animations. So you have to use the panel that is included.

    Brandon,

    Good to hear that! The rudder effect and main landing gear behavior of the 777-200 is very well done, so it is possible :)

    There is a major problem with this aircraft! If you have FSX and do a flight with this aircraft, there are no gauges and stuff on the panel(it is blank). So if you add another panel to it, the landing gear will be really messed up. So you either have to fly without auto pilot(that sucks when doing transatlantic flights), or get a panel with gauges and install it and have retarded landing gear. :(

    Chris, I went to that link you provided, and edited the panel configuration and there is still an error. The main landing gear looks fine, but when you are on the ground, it is in the position when in the air. And the nose gear is sideways
    :(

    Try this:

    Go to the panel folder of the default b747-400 in FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\b747_400\panel\ ) and copy all files to the panel folder of your posky 744 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\POSKY 744V4_United\panel\ ).

    Then open the panel.cfg file of the posky 744 and scroll down until you see "[Default View]". Now paste this between "gauge06=BoeingGeneric!Audio, 0, 216, 125, 26" and "[Default View]":

    [VCockpit03]
    size_mm=512,512
    pixel_size=512,512
    texture=$Posky_ACU
    background_color=0,0,0
    gauge00=Posky744!PkyCALC, 140,80,140,80
    gauge01=Posky744!PkyNosegearheight, 140,80,140,80
    gauge02=Posky744!PkyBodygearheight, 140,80,140,80
    gauge03=Posky744!PkyWinggearheight, 140,80,140,80
    gauge04=Posky744!PkyLeftgearboggie, 140,80,140,80
    gauge05=Posky744!PkyRightgearboggie, 140,80,140,80
    gauge06=Posky744!PkyLeftwgearboggie, 140,80,140,80
    gauge07=Posky744!PkyRightwgearboggie, 140,80,140,80
    gauge08=Posky744!PkyNosegearsteerling, 140,80,140,80
    gauge09=Posky744!PkyWINGROOTFLEX, 140,80,140,80
    gauge10=Posky744!PkyRWINGMIDFLEX, 140,80,140,80
    gauge11=Posky744!PkyRWINGTIPFLEX, 140,80,140,80
    gauge12=Posky744!PkyLWINGMIDFLEX, 140,80,140,80
    gauge13=Posky744!PkyLWINGTIPFLEX, 140,80,140,80
    gauge14=Posky744!PkyRudder, 140,80,140,80

    Save and close the file, it should work fine now.

    Do I Copy the default 747-400 panel folder itself, Or just the four things inside of the default 747-400 panel folder?

    I figured it out.. you have to copy the default 747-400 panel folder, and paste it in the POSKY 747 airplane folder, and when it asks to overwrite say "yes". Thankyou so much for your help!! :)

    Hello,

    I have encountered the following when trying to do the above mentioned steps when using word pad for the panel cfg in the airplane's folder:

    "You are about to save the document in a Text-Only format, which will remove all formatting. Are you sure you want to do this?"

    You are then prompted with a yes or no.

    When hitting yes, you get this response:

    "Access to C:\program files (x86)\ Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Sim objects\POSKY744V4_Korean Air\Panel .cfg was denied."

    I have FSX Acceleration and I am using the 64 bit Vista operating system. I am trying to make the panel operational from the Posky website for Korean Air 747V4. - POSKY 744V4_Korean Air.zip

    I made sure that the entire text was saved in new courier 10 point font to make it consistent with the other text that was already in place.

    I am not sure what to do to save the above mentioned steps?

    Thank you in advance for answering my question.

    I am not a Vista user, but it might have something to do with permissions. Perhaps you have to logon as administrator or something?

    Hello,

    Thank you for your help. It was an administrator issue. I turned off the User Account Control (UAC) function in Vista. I successfully installed the 747-400 into FSX.

    Hello Chris:
    I download the 747-400 in the liverie of KLM and it does'nt have engine sound. I've searched this sound in the POSKY page, but it does'nt say anything about sound package. And do I have to install the vehicles?
    What can I do with the sound?
    Posted By: Chris

    on 04/15/2009 at 3:32:12

    The vehicles should show up when you open the cargo doors. The doors, including the passenger doors, can be opened with:

    Hold SHIFT and press 1,2,3 or 4

    For sounds, check out the AVSIM Library (https://library.avsim.net), many sound packages there. You need to open a free account in order to download files. Also check out the description of this video:
