PMDG 747-400
review
The Boeing 747 is a long-range, wide body commercial passenger jet aircraft. The Boeing 747-400 was launched in 1985 and entered service in 1989. The -400 version introduced improvements like winglets, tail fuel tanks, new more powerful and fuel efficient engines, new interior, and new glass cockpit with six large CRT displays. The stretched upper deck that was introduced with the -300 version was standard for the passenger and combi variants, while the new cargo version kept the smaller upper deck, which was useless in freighter configuration as no cargo is placed on this deck.
Always wanted to fly a real Boeing 747? Well, since the release of the PMDG 747-400, there is only a small difference between simulation and the real thing. From a highly detailed exterior to a beautiful and fully functional virtual cockpit, this is one of the most realistic packages ever developed for FS.
The 2d panel looks very realistic and so does the virtual cockpit. There are no separate vc/non-vc models, but you can just enable or disable the virtual cockpit in the PMDG menu while you're flying. Many systems are simulated: IRS, TCAS, FMC, fuel system, electrical system, and many more. It's possible to program or load flight plans into the FMC and perform a cat3 ILS auto landing. You can access those systems on the 2d panel or in the virtual cockpit. Besides pushing buttons and moving handles, there are many other animations in the virtual cockpit, like move seats forward/back and raise/lower armrests. In both 2d panel mode and virtual cockpit mode, the CDU's (the displays) can be magnified by clicking on them. Even the steering wheel of the nose gear is moving along with rudder input when you're taxiing. Approaching the airport in the captain seat looks and feels just like you're really there.
The exterior model looks exactly like its real world counterpart. Many animations are programmed, down to the smallest detail. The wings are not only moving up and down depending on lift, but also moving for a little while taxiing. It is clearly visible how much fuel is on board, the wings bend down deeply with full fuel. The flaps are moving exactly like the real 747 flaps are moving, which is quite slow (usually, the flaps of FS aircraft are moving unrealistically fast). The spoilers are moving independently from each other while rolling out. The landing gear is very detailed and behaves very realistic. Many other animations are programmed, too much to mention. Many details and animations usually translate to bad performance as in low frame rate. But it seems that PDMG did a great job once again, the frame rate is still quite good on an average system.
The flight dynamics are excellent and operate within a narrow margin of Boeing's specifications. All three engine variants are modeled, each of them with its own flight dynamics. A cargo version of the Boeing 747-400, the 747-400F is available as an expansion model. With the failures module you can set failures at random intervals or target specific systems with variable and progressive damage factors. The abnormal procedures manual (which is part of the operation manual with hundreds of pages) comes in handy in that case. The package contains only the PMDG house livery, but many high quality liveries can be downloaded for free from the PMDG website. More free liveries are available on websites like AVSIM.

A tad too expensive for me. Does it impact framerates massively?on 08/09/2008 at 21:24:09
It is an excellent model but yes the framerates do suffer at timeson 08/23/2008 at 2:55:16
Just ordered it. Hope the framerates are okay. I'll fly without VC, though...on 08/24/2008 at 19:53:53
Frames aren't too bad especially compared to the ifly 747.on 08/25/2008 at 15:55:53
I agree, for the iFly, you need a quite fast computer. Best to use the FS2004 version for that matter.on 09/24/2008 at 12:53:10
I just bought it. I have a fairly low end system but this does not actually have lag problems. It runs rather well. I think 20fps was what I got.My processor is 1.6GHz and 789MB of RAM.on 10/06/2008 at 13:50:28
For all of you people like me, If you are waiting for PMDG to make the FSX 747 version BOXED (on CD) they already have ^^ aerosoft.comon 11/16/2008 at 21:53:48
Hey, I was just wondering if anyone could give me a COMPLETE tutorial on starting the engines up. Whenever I follow the manuals (for most aircraft w/glass cockpits), the gauges (i.e. ECIAS) does not show up. Please post here or email me at[email protected]

This is unbelievable. I've flown two 8 hour flights with this plane of FS2004. This is basically the only plane I fly in FS2004 now even though I have many more. This is my favorite plane. Mostly due to performance is why I like this plane so much. Along with that the panel is so darn accurate and the autopilot is great. Unbelievable. I hope PMDG will soon develop the 747-8 Intercontinental and the 747-400ER.on 12/23/2008 at 21:17:07
It's a shame this plane isn't more fuel efficient; it's a lot more fuel efficient in real life. I calculated that this plane can only fly 5500 nautical miles while in real life, it can fly 7200 nautical miles.on 12/24/2008 at 14:02:46
I have a problem with my 747 for FS9. I load the flight. The panels are working and i can see everything. then out of no where, The panels all turn black. and i cant see my Speed, Alt. Etc. Please Help. Thankyou.on 12/24/2008 at 15:48:56
That is the build in security against illegal versions. So, if your PMDG 747 is legal, uninstall and reinstall or contact the PMDG support. If you version is illegal, get rid of it.on 01/28/2009 at 23:40:44
PMDG is the best of it's model out there, no complaints with it. FMC, fuel consumptions, aircraft systems (avionics) and best of all is it's flight dynamics .. overall the BEST!For those who are saying that they're catching problems with the gauge. If you have an illegal version, expect some complications.
Just get rid of it, and get a legitimate one.

I have a message to all those people who are having problems with their screens going black. This happened to me too. I have emailed PMDG and they reported it's a problem with the registration and the best thing you can do is to uninstall and reinstall this product making sure that the registration is accurate. If the registration isn't accurate, black screens will appear again. Hope I helped.on 02/20/2009 at 16:45:29
yea i contacted pmdg and they told me what to do and now it works :O i cant wait till i get FLYTAMPA's VHHX Kai Tak sceenery. i could fly from KSFO to VHHX on United :D Chris you should make reviews for sceeneries. thankson 02/20/2009 at 17:01:56
Scenery reviews will be added in the future...on 04/17/2009 at 1:07:13

As far as i know, you need to set ILS frenquency of the runway you'll be landing on, and sometime on long final push all three autopilots.on 05/26/2009 at 11:55:14
when i installed this model, none of the gauges worked. even when i followed the manual. nothing worked in the cockpit and whats worse was that the aircraft had a twisted front wheel. this was very weird. im going to have to reject this model and i got my money back. im now using the iFly panel with the Overland model.on 06/07/2009 at 9:59:32
B747dude Areosoft takes 28 days to ship it to the u.s and PDMG ask you to get a one year warenty for their products. wilco only takes about 3-4 days+ .95 if you live in the U.S and 1-2 days if you live in united kingdom 2.99

I baught it and im not impressed. The add-on texture are WAY TOO REFLECTIVE!!!!! can someone tell me how to fix it?on 07/17/2009 at 21:18:02
Every week I go on a trans atlantic journey with this big boy from Toronto Pearson - London Heathrow and all I can think is "This aircraft is truely amazing". It is worth every penny. To start off the textures from the PMDG site look absolutely amazing in FSX and very good is FS2004 aswell. It features an almost fully functional flight management computer along with a min boggling array of switches and aircraft systems. This is an extremely realistic aircraft and is a must buy for anyone looking for realism in their simulator. It performs at a steady 20-25 FPS (FSX) in London Heathrow default scenery set at "Very High" and texture and mesh settings on maximum (no AI traffic whatsoever). If you are buying this product I also recommend you buy the "Angle Of Attack PMDG 747 training" it is extremely comprehensive and will get you up and running in the 747 very quickly and FS2Crew PMDG 747 edition to top the realism level offHope this helped!

I really like the model overall. The realism of the animations in the wings, gear, and so many other things are amazing. With the sound update, I found the GE and PW versions good. However, the sounds of the RR have too much of a "ringing" sound. The engine shapes and size are good. However, on the PW version, the wing attachments for engines 2 and 3 are no round enough. The should be "convex" but the attachment is the same as the GE, which is somewhat unrealistic. As a matter of fact, the PW wing attachment is almost concave. Frame rates can also be lousy for those with slower computers. However, my computer's specs are good enough so that it rarely happens. Other than that, it's super realistic.on 09/17/2009 at 11:47:13
This plane is actually one of the best but strangelynever had this problem before now whenever i engage the LNAV and CMD L/C/R button to fly on course the plane seems to be doing its own thing not following the Route waypoint patterns set in the FMC I'm wondering whats up with that any one else experiencing the same problem??? or do i need to purchase airac nav database that need to be updated frequently??.....
on 09/17/2009 at 13:10:03
Ace thats because you havent gone to the legs pageselect L1 and activate the consult with the manual from time to time
and yes it is recommended that you update the airac database
PMDG 747 is the best wish they make a 777 and 787 in the future
Chris there are tones of aircraft add-ons worth reviewing great work keep it coming regards......

Re-installed pmdg nothing happened. So frustated anyone can help me out in this one ?? Altitude panels, engine panels and heading etc panels all are dark....dead, but engines are runnung everything is working except that. I did update from website itself but didn't work at all....Any ideas ???????????Add a Comment
