Vladimir Zhyhulskiy An-26

review

The Antonov An-26 is a twin-engined light turboprop aircraft and is the (military)-transport and cargo version of the very similar An-24 passenger aircraft. The An-26 was the first Soviet military transport aircraft to have a fully pressurised cargo hold. About 1410 An-26s had been built when the production ended in 1985.

Vladimir Zhyhulskiy developed this nice An-24 model for FS2004. The exterior looks very good, as do the liveries. The panel looks good, but not all systems are simulated. Although some buttons have english tool-tips, there is a great number of buttons without them, which makes it difficult to operate the aircraft. The virtual cockpit is a bit simple with very limited functionality. An animated co-pilot and flight engineer are visible in the virtual cockpit. The wings and engines are not modeled in the vc mode, which means that there aren't wingviews.

The An-26 has all the usual animations plus opening doors, moving cargo, etc. Some special animations are custom smoke effects on engine start, dirt effects on grass or gravel and cargo that can be dropped by parachute (I just have no idea how, the manual isn't very clear about it). Also, the startup smoke and dirt effects do not appear on the right location, but that can be modified. For that, check the installation instructions below. Sounds are not included, the sound of the default Beech King Air 350 is used instead. There seems to be at least one bug: the landing lights are displaced and appear below the wings.

    Installation instructions for FS2004

    1. Unzip the file "an26zh_08.zip" to a temporary folder. Now go to the aircraft folder of FS2004 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\ ) and create a new folder called "An-26".

    2. Copy the contents of the temporary folder to the newly created "An-26" folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\An-26\ ).

    3. Go to the "effect" folder inside the "An-26" folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\An-26\effect\ ) and copy the contents to the main effects folder of FS2004 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Effects\ ). Make sure that you copy all three .fx files and the texture folder! After that, you may delete this "effect" folder inside the "An-26" folder.

    4. Go to the "GAU" folder inside the "An-26" folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\An-26\GAU\ ) and copy the contents to the main gauges folder of FS2004 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Gauges\ ). After that, you may delete this "GAU" folder inside the "An-26" folder.

    5. Download the fs2004 mod files

    6. Unzip "fs9-mod-an-26.zip" to a temporary folder. Go to the temporary folder and check if you see the sub-folder: "effects". Copy the contents of the "effects" folder to the main effects folder of FS2004 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Effects\ ) and Choose "overwrite".

The aircraft is now ready for use in FS2004. The displaced landing lights are part of the model and can't be corrected.

    Installation instructions for FSX

This aircraft was developed for FS2004, but it works in FSX too. Follow these steps to make this aircraft work in FSX:

    1. Unzip the file "an26zh_08.zip" to a temporary folder. Now go to the airplanes folder of FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\ ) and create a new folder called "An-26".

    2. Copy the contents of the temporary folder to the newly created "An-26" folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\An-26\ ).

    3. Go to the "effect" folder inside the "An-26" folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\An-26\effect\ ) and copy the contents to the main effects folder of FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Effects\ ). Make sure that you copy all three .fx files and the texture folder! After that, you may delete this "effect" folder inside the "An-26" folder.

    4. Go to the "GAU" folder inside the "An-26" folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\An-26\GAU\ ) and copy the contents to the main gauges folder of FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Gauges\ ). After that, you may delete this "GAU" folder inside the "An-26" folder.

    5. Download the fsx mod files

    6. Unzip "fsx-mod-an-26.zip" to a temporary folder. Go to the temporary folder and check if you see two sub-folders: "effects" and "texture". Copy the contents of the "effects" folder to the main effects folder of FSX (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Effects\ ) and Choose "overwrite". Copy the contents of the "texture" folder to each texture folder of this aircraft (texture, Texture.AFL, Texture.UN and Texture.VMF) and Choose "overwrite".

The aircraft is now ready for use in FSX. Note that the propeller might look a bit strange when the engines are on. This is an issue with FSX SP2 and Acceleration. Right now, there is no fix available for this problem. The displaced landing lights are part of the model and can't be corrected.

    FSX mod files info

The textures are modified to be able to see through the windows. The modified effect files correct the location of the engine smoke and dirt effects.
