Jens B. Kristensen DC-4 V2.1

review

The DC-4 is a four-engined propeller-driven airliner developed by the Douglas Aircraft Company. The DC-4 program began when United Airlines requested a new airliner from Douglas with a higher capacity than the Douglas DC-3. Even before the first DC-3 had made it's first flight, Douglas Aircraft and United Air Lines were discussing a 4-engined aircraft with double the capacity, which led to the first of the great family of Douglas 4-engined airliners. Douglas delivered two gigantic prototype DC-4E's (E for experimental) in 1938, with a split-level deck, pressurization, and a triple tail like the Lockheed Constellation's. United experimented with one of these prototypes, but decided that it was not economical enough and sent it back in 1939 with a request for something simpler.

Douglas redesigned the DC-4E with a single deck, four Pratt & Whitney Wasp piston engines and a more orthodox wing and tailplane design. By the time the first DC-4's were coming off the line, World War II was underway, so the DC-4 never saw civilian service until 1946. The first DC-4 flew in military markings in early 1942 as the C-54 Sky. The DC-4 was also flown by the U.S. Navy as the R5D. Douglas built 1,241 of the DC-4s and its military counterparts.

Jens B. Kristensen developed this detailed DC-4 add-on for both FS2004 and FSX. The exterior looks nice and the textures are not bad. However, the landing gear looks a bit 'white' like there are missing textures, which isn't the case. The exterior would look a whole lot better with more detail on certain parts like the landing gear. The package comes with an easy to use self-installer, which can be used to install the aircraft in FS2004 and FSX. The package includes five DC-4 models including the military variant C-54B, 14 liveries, panel, virtual cockpit and manual. The panel looks nice but the VC is a bit simple. The wings are modeled into the VC so there is also a wingview. Engine sounds are not included, the default DC-3 sound is used instead. The 8 pages PDF manual explains everything you need to know about this model.

    notes

Flying Tip: Always be on full power (except on landing) or bad things will happen! ;)

Note that version v1.0 repaints/liveries are NOT compatible with this version, V2.1.

    Suggested sound pack:

Search for the files 'dc3sndpk.zip' and 'dc-4snds.zip' in the AVSIM Library (https://library.avsim.net/index.php). The file 'dc3sndpk.zip' contains a sound pack for the DC-3, use the sound.cfg file in 'dc-4snds.zip' for DC-4 sound.
