Project Opensky 777-200/300 v2

review

The Boeing 777 is a long haul wide-body commercial passenger jet aircraft. It can carry between 301 and 550 passengers over a distance of max. 17,446 Km. The 777 was launched to fill the gap between the 767-300ER and the 747-400. The first 777 entered service with United Airlines in 1995.

Project Opensky, is a freeware aircraft developer group that has been around for some time. They developed many aircraft models for FS2002 and FS2004, mostly Boeing aircraft. Their Boeing 777-200 is a highly detailed representation of its real world counterpart. There are a lot animations which are very accurate. The landing gear is very detailed, a work of art. The animation of the main landing gear is perfect, just like the real thing! Also the independent suspension is very well done and clearly visible, especially with hard landings or turbulent weather. Also, the rear wheels of the main landing gear are steering on steep turns.

The wings are flexing depending on lift and can be seen in the virtual cockpit mode of the wingview (non-vc) model. Another positive thing is the rudder effect. Many posky aircraft are suffering from limited to no rudder yaw effect at all, but this one is different. Crosswind landings even with strong wind are no problem. There are many more features, a few of them are: Body gear steering under 15kt above 1kt, nose gear steering under 60kt above 1kt, rudder lock under 60kt above 1kt, ground spoiler only works on ground, low speed aileron locks at high speed, ground service vehicles appear when the cargo doors are opened (SHIFT + 2), etc. Of course, all the common animations are also present.

By default, an edited version of the default 777 panel is used (FS2004), but there is also a virtual cockpit model available. This vc looks nice, although the functionality is limited. The common flight controls and autopilot switches are clickable, but the rest of levers and switches are not working. Still, the vc is nicely done, flying mainly in vc mode shouldn't be a problem. Don't forget that this is freeware, if you really want advanced systems programming, there are many payware alternatives. Project Opensky has done an outstanding job on this aircraft and is absolutely worth downloading!

    Installation instructions (last edited on 12/12/08)

    While it is no problem for experienced simmers or computers wizards to install aircraft that are developed by Project Opensky, some people may find it difficult. It is Projects Opensky's policy to make all the files that made up their aircraft available in various parts. Their installation instructions are only understandable by more experienced users. We would love to see an installation program for their products, but till then, we have to do it by hand. Here some instructions to help you install their Boeing 777-200. Note that all paths to folders are those of Windows XP in English language.

    1. Go to https://www.projectopensky.com/downloads-index.php and download one of the 777-200 liveries. In this example, we'll scroll down to "Boeing 777-200 Version 2" and click on the "North America" link. We'll click the download link for the "United Airlines Current Livery".

    2. After you have downloaded the file "OS772V2_PW4074_UA.zip", unzip it to a temporary folder. Go to the temporary folder and copy the folder "OS772V2_PW4074_UA" to the aircraft folder of FS2004 or FSX. If flight simulator is installed on your C: drive, then this are the locations of the aircraft folders:

    FS2004: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\

    FSX: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\

    3. Now go to the new aircraft you've just copied and go to the folder "777-effects" (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\OS772V2_PW4074_UA\777-effects\ or for FSX users: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\OS772V2_PW4074_UA\777-effects\ )

    Now copy all files in that folder (which are all the effect files, those that end with .fx) to the main effects folder (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Effects\) or FSX (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Effects\).

    4. You've now installed the aircraft, but FSX users must do a few more things. First, go to the "OS772V2_PW4074_UA" folder and then to the "FSX" folder (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\OS772V2_PW4074_UA\FSX\). In that folder, there are 2 other folders (panel and sound) and one file (Aircraft.cfg). Copy both folders (not the Aircraft.cfg file) to the "OS772V2_PW4074_UA" folder and make sure that you overwrite the old files.

    You also need to alias the sound to the default Boeing 737-800 in FSX instead of the default Boeing 737-400 in FS2004. Go to the sound folder of the 777-200 (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\OS772V2_PW4074_UA\sound\) and open the file "sound.cfg" with notepad or another text editor. Now you need to change 737_400 to 737_800, so it looks like this:

    [fltsim]
    alias=B737_800\sound

    Save the file.

    Installation instructions for the virtual cockpit (for FS2004 users only)

    1. First, go to the "OS772V2_PW4074_UA" folder (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\OS772V2_PW4074_UA\ ) and rename the "model" folder to "model.wv". Now create a folder called "model.vc". We do that, so you can choose between the wingview (standard) model and the virtual cockpit model.

    2. Go to https://www.projectopensky.com/downloads-index.php and download the virtual cockpit required files. In this example, we'll scroll down to "Boeing 777-200 Version 2" and click on the "Model Packages" link. No you'll see a long list with model files. At the time I wrote this instructions, the SP2A (Service Pack 2A) version was the newest. We now have to download the virtual cockpit model files for the Boeing 777. We will use the example of the installation instructions above, the 777-200 in United Airlines colors. To know which version you need, go to the model folder inside the aircraft folder of this Posky 777-200 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\OS772V2_PW4074_UA\model\ ).

    Now you should see a model file with a .mdl extension. In this case, we see OS772V2_PW4000--L.mdl . Now go back to the project opensky website, to the list with model files. You now know you need the VC model of the "PW4000--L" version. That's this version:

    SP2A_PW4000 L Cargo model (OS772V2_PW4000--L_VC)

    Click the download link on the right to download this file.

    3. After you've downloaded this file (OS772V2_PW4000--L_VC_SP2A.zip), unzip it to a temporary folder. Go inside that temp. folder and then in the folder "OS772V2_PW4000--L_VC". Now you should see a folder called "model", a folder called "Texture" and one file called "Readme.txt" Now go inside the "model" folder. You now should see 2 files: "OS772V2_PW4000--L_VC.mdl" and "model.cfg". Copy both files to the "model.vc" folder you've just created (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\OS772V2_PW4074_UA\model.vc\ ).

    Now go inside the "Texture" folder. Copy both texture files (the ones that end with .bmp) to each livery texture folder of the Boeing 777-200, which is in this case just one, the "texture.UA" folder (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\OS772V2_PW4074_UA\texture.UA\ ).

    4. Open the Aircraft.cfg file inside the "OS772V2_PW4074_UA" folder (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\OS772V2_PW4074_UA\ ) with notepad or another text editor.

    The first [fltsim] section should look like this:

    [fltsim.0]
    title=Boeing 777-200 - PW4074 - United Airlines
    sim=Boeing 777-200-PW4074
    model=
    panel=
    sound=
    texture=UA
    checklists=

    atc_airline=UNITED
    atc_id=N775UA
    atc_flight_number=
    atc_heavy=1
    atc_parking_types=GATE, RAMP, CARGO
    atc_parking_code=UAL

    ui_manufacturer=Project Opensky
    ui_type=777-200
    ui_variation=United Airlines
    visual_damage=1
    description=Project Opensky Boeing 777-200\nVersion 2-2008.1.0\n\nModel Designers\n Hiroshi Igami\n Yosuke Ube\n\n Textures\n Yosuke Ube\n\nFlight Dynamics, Effects and Sound Designer\n Brandon D. Now we have to make two [fltsim] sections, one for the wingview model and one for the virtual cockpit model. Those two section should look like this (you may copy the sections below and paste them over the existing one):

    [fltsim.0]
    title=Boeing 777-200 - PW4074 - United Airlines (WV)
    sim=Boeing 777-200-PW4074
    model=wv
    panel=
    sound=
    texture=UA
    checklists=

    atc_airline=UNITED
    atc_id=N775UA

    model=vc
    panel=

    5. Go back to https://www.projectopensky.com/downloads-index.php and scroll down to "Boeing 777-200 Version 2" and click on the "Panel Packages" link. Click on the download link on the right side of "Virtual Cockpit Panel SP2A". When you've downloaded the panel file "os777v2_VC_panel_SP2A.zip", unzip it to a temporary folder. Go inside the temporary folder, then go in the folder "os777v2_VC_panel_SP2A" and then inside the folder "panel". In that folder, you see 3 other folders and a few files. Copy all folders and files to the panel folder of your Boeing 777-200 and make sure that you overwrite the old files (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\OS772V2_PW4074_UA\panel\ ).

    6. Go back to https://www.projectopensky.com/downloads-index.php and scroll down to "Boeing 777-200 Version 2" and click on the "Panel Packages" link. Click on the download link right of "Virtual Cockpit 32-Bit bmp Textures" for the high quality 32-bits textures or "Virtual Cockpit DXTbmp Textures" for the lower quality DXT3 textures. When you've downloaded either one of the texture files (os777v2_VC_32-bit_BMP_ Textures_FS9.zip or os777v2_VC_DXT_BMP_ Textures_FS9.zip) unzip it to a temporary folder. Go inside the temporary folder and then go in the folder "os777v2_VC_32-bit_BMP_ Textures_FS9" or "os777v2_VC_DXT_BMP_ Textures_FS9". Now you'll see a folder called "Texture". Copy the contents of that folder (all .bmp texture files) to the livery texture folders of your Boeing 777-200 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft\OS772V2_PW4074_UA\texture.UA\ ).

    NOTE: If you have more texture folders for other liveries, you have to copy all those files to each of them.

    Andrew:

    You need to download and install the vc panel. Click on "Download location(s)" and click on "Project Opensky website (virtual cockpit required files)". Download the "Virtual Cockpit Panel" package and install.

    The vc should be working now.

    Ben:

    In the readme.txt of the posky 777 is explained how to install this aircraft in FSX:

    1. Unzip the file to the 'FS Root\SimObjects\Airplane' directory.
    2. Move the files contained with 777-effects to 'FS Root\Effects'
    3. Move the alternate Aircraft.cfg, Panel & Sounds folders in the included
    '\FSX' folder
    into the main aircraft folder overwriting the originals.

    Unzip the file to the 'FS Root\SimObjects\Airplane' directory

    what is that i have no clue where that is
    Posted By: Chris

    on 08/06/2008 at 20:52:04

    Well, most likely here (if fsx is installed on your C: drive):

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\

    Unzip the file os777v2_VC_panel(2).zip to a temporally folder. Then in the temporally folder, look for the folder called "panel". Copy the contents of that folder to the panel folder of your 777-200 in FSX (e.g.
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\posky777).

    Let me know if you successfully installed it, otherwise I try to explain it in more detail.

    You can find that info in the readme.txt:

    Opening Passenger (L1) door: Shift + E ( Opening door )
    Opening Cargo Doors: Shift + E + 2
    Opening Passenger (L2) door: Shift + E + 3
    Opening Bulk Cargo Door: Shift + E + 4

    The trucks will appear when the cargo doors are opened.

    Yes that's right. The folder that contains the aircraft.cfg should be copied to the aircraft folder of fs. Read the installation instructions in the readme.txt file.

    Hi,
    May I know where I can get "Boeing777-300.gau"?
    I dont have FS2004.

    thanks for your information.
    Posted By: Chris

    on 08/29/2008 at 10:17:19

    The Boeing777-300.gau file is part of FS2004 and cannot be downloaded separately. Offering it for download would be software piracy. So you have to purchase FS2004 if you want to use the posky 777 panel.

    Thanks Chris for your answer.

    I have followed the steps above, except for adding "Boeing777-300.gau". However when I open FSX, I still cannot see the aircraft in the list.

    Is it because I doesn't add that *.gau file?

    thanks for your information.

    If you've followed all the steps, the aircraft should be visible in the aircraft selection list. The gauge file only affects the functionality of the panel.

    These are really good and detailed instructions for which I thank you. They've been a great help and I've carried them out to the letter. However, I have a problem which I've continually encountered after downloading 3-4 different 772's. Every single one of them shows up as a plain white model in FSX with no textures showing at all. I have installed many 3rd party aircraft and I know how the texture folder should be represented in the aircraft.cfg file, and the textures do show up as thumbnails in the texture folder so I can see that they are there - but try as I might all I ever get is a plain white model. Anybody got a clue why?

    Hmmm...try to turn off "light bloom" in the display settings. This sometimes happens with fs9 aircraft with bmp textures, most of the time with FSX SP2 or Acceleration.

    Disregard my earlier question on the fs2004 gau file. I sped through and didn't see the existing comment.

    I tried the Malaysia livery with the UA aircraft in the notes section. No engines display. Then I read the install notes with the Malaysia livery and it requires this air file, [Boeing 777-200ER Rolls Royce-Trent 892.air], which is not included in any of the Trent downloads as far as I can tell. Any clues where to find this file?

    Nolan,

    It seems that Posky removed their FDE files?!

    Nevermind, download this file from the AVSIM Library:

    posky_malaysia_heliconia_b777-200.zip

    It's a repaint of less quality, but contains the air file you need for the Malaysia repaints.

    The VC still doesn't work in FSX. We have to wait for an update from Posky...

    However, you might try this tutorial:

    For those of you who are having trouble with installing the VC, here could be some of the problems.
    1. You don't have the FS9 Boeing777-300.gau file in the FSX gauges file. Boeing777-300.gau file could be obtained manually from several downloading locations and default 777-300s that were converted to FSX use.
    2. (very important) If you don't have FS9, the VC won't work without the "msvcr70.dll" file which could be downloaded off of websites. This file isn't placed in the FSX folder, but in your C-drive-(or whatever you have)-Windows--systems, and drop it there. By the way, I am not sure if this could result in computer damage. Even though it worked fine for me, the process seems to be more of a "modifying your computer" rather than "modifying your aircraft file" which might have side effects on your computer . I would say use this step at your computer's risk.

    i fixed it and Chris you should review the -300 in a seperate page ( that would be awsome if you review the -300)
    Posted By: Chris

    on 03/15/2009 at 8:42:24

    The -200 and -300 versions are almost identical, so there is no need to review them on separate pages.

    Sander: That livery is painted by me. Thanks for the compliment :) It is also available in the AVSIM Library under my own name. All liveries available on the download pages of the website are done by me, when I feel like painting...

    hi guys...
    I can you please tell me how can i increase the turning radius of this airplane...coz its skidding above 10 knots...and a real 777 can taxi upto 20 knots...
    thanks
    Btw-i think the thrust is way too much for a real 777..but again its my opinion...!! :) :)
    thanks...!!

    Yes, but I used Adobe Illustrator for all those lines...and that just takes some time. However, using vector graphics guarantees smooth edges.

    Hey Chris thanks for all the wonderful reviews. The only thing I would point as "bad" in this a/c is that the gauges in the VC are very blurry and hard too see (i can not tell wether I'm at 3600 or 6800 ft for ex) Maybe it's just a problem I only experience, if not please tell me how to fix it :) !! Thanks again

    Hello

    This is by far the best 777 I have seen for this game.

    I got it ingame, but it dont have any sound, or a cockpit at all.....help?

    I am new to adding planes, and Hope I did it right, my plane don't look near as good as the one in the pic above, but that may be graphics.

    I downloaded the Boeing livery 777 from Posky site, and it works, but no sound.

    Help would be appreciated!
